Erding - The hobby gardeners in the district are in the starting blocks.

The gardens and beds are prepared.

Some experts reveal what and when can be planted here.

Growing vegetables in your own garden is all the rage.

To be able to harvest in late summer, you have to start planting early.

Now is the ideal time for it, says Brigitte Murla, who has been chairwoman of the district association for horticulture and land maintenance for almost seven years.

"For vegetable plants, however, an early harvest fleece is necessary that can keep out light frost," she explains, given the still cool nights.

Bernd Grabert, chairman of the Erding allotment gardening association, advises: “Tomatoes must not be planted before the ice saints.

If at all, these could be planted in a greenhouse, but only covered with fleece. ”Silke Hilger, chairwoman of the Moosinning Horticultural Association, will also wait until after the ice saints (May 11th to 15th) with the planting of vegetables.

“If you plant me in April, then I'll come when I want.

If you plant me in May, then I'll come the same. ”Rudi Brand, head of the St. Wolfgang horticultural association, keeps to this saying.

He advises planting radishes from May, for example.

In the greenhouse, it can be done earlier.

"This year April is relatively cool, but lettuce plants can now be planted in the raised bed," says Brand.

“I now have radishes and will later plant iceberg lettuce together in a raised bed.

The next one has green beans and carrots and the third one has celery and lettuce, ”explains Hilger.

When the lettuce is harvested, she puts radishes - and vice versa.

“Everything that roots in the ground can be grown in April.

Radi and radishes, for example, are relatively insensitive. "

Brand's tip: “In the raised bed, you should make sure that the plants protect each other.

In the case of a heavy eater, all nutrients are drawn from the soil, which is why only a few remain. "

And how do you fight snails and other pests? "The only way to prevent snail infestation on the ground is to remove it by hand, if you don't want to use a chemical stick like slug pellets," says Hilger. “It is best to put stones in the garden under which the clutches of snails can collect,” advises Brand. To catch the snails before they reach the vegetable garden, you can use organic slug pellets under the bushes or hedges, for example.

Lice can be removed from the plants with washing-up liquid or, in individual cases, the pests can be removed from the leaves with a glove, says Grabert.

He advises planting bee-friendly flowers or grasses next to vegetables and - if there is enough space - fruit trees.

Many of them are currently already blooming, which is why he has to pay attention to the watering.

"If the cold comes back again, the trees must also be covered with fleece," emphasizes Grabert.

Murla advises beginners to plant a locust tree, for example.

"In smaller gardens there is also the option of planting small fruit trees such as the gooseberry as a high trunk."

Brand knows that "potted fruit trees can be planted all year round".

But with bare roots it is time to plant them, "because they are already sprouting." The base of the trees should be at least ten centimeters above the ground when the hole is filled.

The processing department must be free.

Are there any trends?

“The perennial of the year is yarrow,” says Murla.

This bloom in its natural form is white and is considered a medicinal plant.

"But it is also available in yellow, red or orange and requires a gravelly substrate as a substrate."

Another tip from her: In a few weeks, for example, annual plants such as bee-friendly marigolds or decorative baskets can be sown.

This also makes the bees happy.
