Two policemen were killed by armed assailants in Akwa Ibom state in southern Nigeria, local police said on Thursday (April 29th), in a new attack on security forces in the region stricken by a wave of violence attributed to a separatist group.

The two police officers were shot dead on Tuesday evening as they returned home to Ika district, police spokesperson Odiko Macdon said in a statement.
The attackers killed the two police officers, including a female corporal, and set their vehicle on fire before attacking the Ika police station which repelled their assault.
Southern Nigeria has for several weeks been the scene of numerous attacks on police stations, detention centers and the security forces in general.
On Saturday, five police officers were killed in an attack in Port-Harcourt, capital of Rivers State, neighboring Akwa Ibom.
Three police officers were also killed on Saturday in the attack on the residence of the governor of Imo state, just north of Rivers.
In the absence of a claim, the Nigerian authorities generally attribute these attacks to the Biafran separatist movement of Ipob (Indigenous Peoples of Biafra), which claims the independence of the Igbo people.
