Security: the French fear the young peril

2021-05-03T18:07:03.005Z

SURVEY - According to the latest Fiducial-Odoxa security barometer, unveiled by Le Figaro, 84% of those polled fear that the problems of 18-34 year olds translate into an increase in delinquency.

Gang wars, which have soared by 24% in one year, have left their mark.

Shocked by the various facts involving minors and the repeated clashes in the cities, public opinion is grimacing for some of the youth.

As the latest Fiducial-Odoxa security barometer revealed by

Le Figaro

reveals

, no less than 84% of French people fear that the problems affecting the new generations will translate into an increase in delinquency and insecurity.

Against the backdrop of a pandemic, it is true that 18-34 year olds face worsening psychological worries more than their elders (+ 10%), a deterioration in their social relations (+ 7%), their love life (+ 6%) as well as employment issues (+ 5%).

But that cannot explain everything.

"The problems of delinquency among a part of the youth are not new and only linked to the consequences of the health crisis",

confirm the authors of the barometer.

Supporting figures, they observe that

"the French identify two main sources: education problems (51%) and the lack of severity and application of legal sanctions (49%)".

Sanction earlier

In addition to the shortcomings of the school and the laxity of the judges, one in three blame the wanderings of part of the youth to

"social and family difficulties"

and the "

lack of employment and professional prospects".

The

"drop"

and

"lack of political action for youth"

are identified as problems by a minority of our citizens.

Analysts note that respondents

"still expect their leaders to put in place more prevention in terms of security for young people."

The French expect solutions at all levels.

Both in terms of prevention, education and social action as well as sanctions and severity towards offenders

The Fiducial-Odoxa security barometer

Thus, 72% of French people and 62% of 18-34 year olds consider that this is insufficient.

"We sometimes present in a binary way the political solutions to insecurity: the left would consider that the answer is essentially the resolution of social problems, the right would affirm on the contrary that it is necessary to sanction to be effective

, notes the barometer security.

The French, for their part, expect solutions at all levels ”

and

“ both in terms of prevention, education and social action as well as sanctions and severity with regard to delinquents ”.

In short, a broad spectrum response.

Convinced of the need to sanction earlier, the French say two-thirds (68%) are in favor of lowering the criminal majority to fifteen years.

"It is a proposal which returns in the public debate",

notes the document which recalls that

"Xavier Bertrand once again formulated it among the first proposals of his presidential program".

This measure is particularly successful among men (73%, against 64% of women) and inhabitants of the Paris area (74%, against 64% of rural residents).

On the security front, the executive has only twelve months to redress the bar before the presidential election.

For the time being, 78% of French people show their mistrust on sovereign issues.

Either a higher rejection than under the five-year term of François Hollande.

Regional: Xavier Bertrand deemed "the most credible"

While the campaign is in full swing, 86% of French people want regional councils to be able to act more on security.

Concretely, reveals the Fiducial-Odoxa barometer, this could result in the “creation of regional police forces”, in charge of transport and high schools.

This idea is supported by 67% of our fellow citizens, in particular among the oldest (74%), but also among the popular categories (71%), traditionally more favorable to decentralization measures.

If 74% of those polled say they are not convinced by the candidates' proposals in terms of security, Xavier Bertrand, president of Hauts-de-France appears to be "

the most credible

" at 23%, ahead of Laurent Wauquiez (16%) in Auvergne -Rhône-Alpes and Valérie Pécresse (16%) in Île-de-France.

The notoriety effect is obvious but that does not explain everything

", note the analysts, who observe that Renaud Muselier, in the South region (3%) or Hervé Morin (4%) in Normandy "are

struggling to emerge

".
