A sudden storm caused some fishermen on the Walchensee considerable problems on Friday.

The missions were not easy for the watchtower either.

Walchensee

- “It was an extremely gusty wind.

The waves were up to one and a half meters high, ”reports Lisa Grünwald from the Walchensee water rescue service.

Several fishermen got into distress.

First, a Garmischer (53) made the emergency call.

According to the water watch, the experienced and well-equipped fisherman was able to save himself to the protected island of Sassau on his own, then the wind snatched the boat from him.

Grünwald reports that it was not easy for the water rescue service to get to the island either.

“The lake was very turbulent.” The four volunteers brought the man who had not been injured into the lifeboat.

They were able to pick up the fisherman's kayak and also bring it to the bank in Niedernach.

Four fishermen hypothermic

On the way back to the rescue station, the next emergency call came at around 6.40 p.m.: four fishermen, traveling in two boats, needed help. The situation was more dramatic here because the rowing boats were already full and unable to maneuver, reports Grünwald. They were family members between the ages of 25 and 59, living in the Augsburg and Munich area. "They said they hadn't seen the warning about the storm flashing on the bank," reports Grünwald. One boat crew had also drifted on the island of Sassau, the other drifted helplessly in the lake. In rain and strong waves, all four people were taken into the lifeboat of the water rescue service. The fishermen were hypothermic and were looked after by the helpers. However, they were then able to drive home independently. The mission lasted around two hours.Due to the weather, the boats were only overtaken by the water rescue service on Saturday.

Exercise with the helicopter

On Saturday morning the weather was calm again, so that a planned helicopter exercise with the ADAC teams "Christoph 1 Munich" and "Christoph Murnau" could take place as planned.

They practiced how to take patients into the helicopter from the water.

“Everything went smoothly,” reports Grünwald.

In the afternoon, divers from the Tölz water rescue service - they operate the rescue station in Niedernach - worked with the Walchensee to repair a 20-meter-deep chain of buoys in the lake.

It was porous and had to be replaced, reports Grünwald.
