Tires, new labeling

2021-05-03T18:30:57.424Z

NEWS - Under a European regulation, a label intended to be more readable for the consumer came into force on May 1st.

Ecology continues to weave its web.

In order for consumers to choose their tires with full knowledge of the facts, in particular for those who buy by mail order or via the Internet, the European Commission voted to introduce a new label.

It entered into force on May 1st.

It thus aims to more easily assess the differences between the different compounds offered by manufacturers in terms of energy efficiency - impact on consumption and rolling resistance - but also in terms of noise pollution and abrasion.

The new regulation therefore applies to C1 (cars), C2 (vans) and C3 (trucks and buses), while specifying that it will apply to retreaded tires as soon as an appropriate test method is available.

The new labels are distinguished by the appearance of additional information. Henceforth appear on the upper part, the commercial name of the supplier, the tire type reference and the dimensions, load and speed indices as well as the class (C1, C2 or C3). The indications of fuel efficiency classes (rolling resistance coefficient) and wet grip efficiency are identical to the old version. The thresholds are nevertheless modified on the lower classes D and E. The classes F and G are removed, because they are lower than the minimum performance threshold required in Europe. The class of external rolling noise formerly illustrated by 3 waves will now be denoted by A, B, C while retaining the value in decibels (dB).Grip information on snow or ice appears if necessary, in the form of a pictogram (3PMSF or ice). Finally, a QR code allows the consumer to access the tire information sheet.

All tires placed on the market since May 1, 2021 must have the new labeling. However, tires manufactured before May 1 have a grace period until November 30, 2021. All tires placed on the market after December 1 must have the new label.
