An exercise in the south of the country would have ended almost fatally for four soldiers in the Swiss military.

According to the dpa news agency, the three recruits and a NCO were found unconscious in their armored personnel carrier on the Simplon Pass on Tuesday night with severe carbon monoxide poisoning.

The »Tages-Anzeiger« had previously reported.

According to the army, three soldiers had to be connected to a ventilator.

According to a spokesman, the condition of all soldiers is not life-threatening.

The soldiers were found by comrades after spending the night on the mountain pass.

According to initial findings, they had the engine running to heat.

Whether the carbon monoxide came from the engine or the heater is being investigated, said the army spokesman.

According to the news site »Blick.ch«, the tank is said to be the lightly armored transport model M113.

According to the »Tages-Anzeiger«, a total of three helicopters and an ambulance were in use.

According to the newspaper, the target practice with combat ammunition on the Simplon Pass will continue until next Tuesday.
