The movie "Can Dad Don't Be Old" allowed the public to understand the difficulties of caring for elderly people with dementia. It turns out that young patients make caregivers even more exhausted.

A husband has counted his feelings about caring for his wife with Alzheimer's disease for seven years. He pointed out that his appearance is no different from ordinary people, but his cognitive ability has been eroded by the disease. He tried to go to the toilet in a shopping mall and couldn’t explain why the toilet was dirty and he was scolded. I don’t know how to repay my mouth in minutes; my husband had to switch to all-night work for the convenience of daytime care. He only sleeps for one to three hours a day. He bluntly said, “You must shout every minute to fill a bottle of mineral water.” Some organizations develop tracing mobile phones for patients’ families. Programs and tracking devices, hoping to help caregivers reduce stress.

The Jockey Club Senior Citizens Park, together with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and St. James' Settlement, today (4th) announced the launch of the "Jockey Club Friends Trail Community Project" to provide substantial assistance to relatives and friends with dementia by combining community networks and technological capabilities , Including the development of a "Youli Track" mobile phone application, combined with the "Guardian Track" electronic device, so that when the patient is lost, the downloaded person can be notified through the program, and the mobile phone can be used to receive signals to trace the whereabouts of the lost person.

The survey found that 84% of respondents were worried that the patient would be lost again

Chen Shuangxing, a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Science and Technology who developed the system, said that the principle is to first allow patients with dementia or cognitive impairment to wear "guard trail" electronic devices in the shape of buttons, crutches or mobile phone cards. If the patient goes missing When the family members ask the service agency for help, the agency will send the message to those who have downloaded the "Youli Track" mobile app, requesting the other party to turn on the Bluetooth and GPS location, and the "Guardian Track" electronic device will send out once every second The Bluetooth signal, as long as anyone receives the signal, it will be automatically transmitted to the cloud server, so as to inform the family members of the patient’s geographic trajectory, so that it can be retrieved as soon as possible, regardless of the program downloader receiving the signal, or missing Patients are handled anonymously, and the cloud server will not record the true identity of the other party to protect the privacy of both parties.

Professor Chen said that the program has received more than 4,200 downloads at present and is studying its promotion to the smart city model, including the trial installation of "angel boxes" that track the "Guardian Tracks" signals in some stores in Hong Kong. It will also cooperate with the government or the public in the future. The organization explores the feasibility of installing boxes on lamp posts or other public devices.

The plan is to conduct online questionnaire surveys at the same time. Within one month from the end of January this year, 576 carers of people with dementia were interviewed via online questionnaires. Seventy-four of them said their relatives and friends were over 80 years old. About 18% of people aged 70 to 79 years old, 30% of the interviewees said that the patient had been lost, and 84% of the family members of the interviewed expressed concern that the patient would be lost again, and 40% would prohibit them from going out alone after the patient was lost. 33% and 28% will add mobile phones and electronic tracking devices to patients.

Family members: The patient's appearance is the same as ordinary people but unable to express feelings

The survey also found that about 50% of the family members interviewed claimed that the patient was found in the residential building or nearby streets, but also 10% of them were found after travelling by car or walking far away. There was also 0.5% of the interviewees. Said that the patient could not be retrieved after leaving the country.

The patient’s family member, Mr. He, said that the 62-year-old wife was confirmed to have Alzheimer’s disease seven years ago. Her dress and appearance are no different from ordinary people, but the disease will gradually affect her language and cognitive abilities. “The situation is not the worst. , Only to get away slowly.” At present, the wife has changed from being able to speak to only saying a few words. Every time she goes out, she must hold her hands tightly. Only when she wants to go to the toilet, will she go to the toilet on her own. It was solved, but once she tried to go to the toilet in a Shatin shopping mall. It happened that the toilet was dry. After she solved it, another woman scolded her, "Is the (toilet) dirty?" Looking at the other party, he was mistaken for a provocation. While waiting outside, he heard louder and louder voices, only to realize that his wife had been scolded for several minutes, and he had to flush into the toilet and hurriedly drag her away to calm the incident.

Mr. Ho said that caring for his wife needs to be transferred to all-night work, and sleep time is also sacrificed.

Mr. He said that his wife did not like to stay at home and love to go out. His 80-year-old mother was unable to understand and accept her daughter’s condition, which caused frequent disputes. He had to change from daytime to overnight work and take his wife out for external use after work every morning. After eating, he returned home a few hours later. He could only sleep for one to two hours. He had to go to work again at 5 pm. He was exhausted to take care of his wife day after day. After that, he entrusted his wife to the day care center to get a few hours of rest. To put it bluntly, "I don’t want to go back all night, I’m going to be quiet, I’m going to shout every minute to fill a bottle of mineral water." He also tried to lose his wife while going to the toilet in a shopping mall a few months ago. Although he found it later, he lost the moment. The mood is indescribable, "I know that a 57-year-old uncle in Tai Po has lost his life. A few months later, Zhong did not return." I think the more related tracking electronic devices, the better, which can help family members find their relatives as soon as possible.

The organizer, Jockey Club Senior Citizens’ Park, stated that a free distribution event will be held on May 22. Interested family members with dementia can visit the Dr. Lin Zhixuan Comprehensive Service Centre in Kwai Chung, the Jockey Club’s Senior Citizens’ Park Shatin Office, and in Tuen Mun and The St. James' Settlement in Western District will receive a "Guardian Track" electronic device after registering, and appeals to the public to download the program.
