Public opinion in France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom is more and more predominantly on the right, according to a survey published Tuesday, May 4 by the Foundation for Political Innovation (Fondapol).

”notes the study carried out using data from the Barometer of Political Confidence from Cevipof (Sciences Po) by OpinionWay.
One year before the presidential election in France, "the
whole question is whether this realignment to the right will benefit a government right or the extreme right
", adds Fondapol in its conclusion. In five years, the proportion of French people on the right of the political spectrum "
has increased continuously, from 33% in 2017 to 38% in 2021
", specifies the survey. Over the same period, the proportion of citizens on the left remained stable (25% in 2017 and 24% in 2021). "
This study also leads to the observation of a failure of the left
", summarize the authors, estimating "
that it no longer manages to impose a collective imagination for several years
".
In terms of migration, 63% of French people say they are resistant to opening up and 62% of citizens believe that Islam "
represents a threat to the Republic
". This fear is shared by 81% of right-wing supporters against 45% for left-wing supporters. The diagnosis of a shift to the right of society "
is based here on the assimilation of values to right-wing culture, including nationalism via the question of identity, economic liberalism and political liberalism indexed to individualism
", analyze the authors of the survey.
On a European scale, this “
shift
” to the right is present in each country studied: 44% of Italians are on the right (31% on the left), 40% of the British (25% on the left), 38% of the French ( 24% on the left) and 36% of the Germans (26% on the left).
Survey carried out in France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom among 7,603 people between January 20 and February 10, 2021 by the polling institute Opinion Way.
