Across the political system, they bit their nails while waiting anxiously for a last-minute prank, a dramatic press conference, a rabbit or a magic that will be pulled out of their hat and shuffle the cards again.

In recent days, Netanyahu has tried all sorts of escape drills from returning the seat to the president - pressure from rabbis on Bezalel Smutrich, a right-wing campaign on the heads of Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked, and tempting proposals for Bnei Gantz to gain the support of the entire right-wing bloc. During the day, he seriously considered informing the president that he had managed to form a government, without actually succeeding, in order to get another week to try to pressure Smutrich and his rabbis towards Mansour Abbas.

Everyone waited until midnight to see what the next step was. But nothing came. The silence simply announced that he had reached a dead end; And after four elections in which he managed to maintain his rule even without winning - he is the closest to a loss than ever. The Knesset will require the active signature of 61 MKs on one candidate and the official support of at least some of the Arab MKs, and it is impossible to make elegant arrangements for absence or abstention.

But more than that, as soon as the mandate passes to someone else, the Likud will also lose the organizing committee and control of the Knesset agenda.

But Rivlin has very wide discretion over the next three days, and Netanyahu's transparent exercises do not necessarily advance the goal. Rivlin does not intend to hold a public conversation ceremony with all party leaders as after the first round, but only to invite anyone who has changed his position to announce it. In the previous round, three factions remained on the fence and did not recommend - New Hope, the joint list and RAAM, which has already announced that it is staying there and enjoying the game.

The possibility that the Likud would recommend Bennett increased the pressure on all three sides: the Likud tried to recruit Abbas to recommend Bennett, Lapid courted Ayman Odeh and Ahmad Tibi again, and they both lashed out at Gideon Saar's ears to get his support. Netanyahu will apparently not recommend Bennett, thus upholstering the chair of those sitting on the fence. Hopefully this morning they will hold a factional consultation and decide whether to attach their name to the recommenders of Lapid, or Bennett. This has mainly a declarative meaning: Saar plays a key role in the two's attempts to form a government, but has difficulty or is afraid to declare it Accept with a committee. Net numerically, if there is no change in the recommenders' map, Lapid's way of getting the mandate is paved anyway.

If he does get the mandate, Lapid will become a prime ministerial candidate for the first time in his life, even though in practice, he holds the title on credit only for at least two years.

He will have 28 days by law to form the rotation government with Bennett, but he is not expected to take the time.

Negotiations between them have already yielded some substantive agreements, and the gaps, say both sides, can be closed within days, with much goodwill.

Netanyahu will try to sabotage as much effort as possible, delay, quarrel, and seduce defectors who will frustrate him.
