The Spanish right, represented by the Popular Party and its rising leader Isabel Diaz Ayuso, won the elections in the Spanish capital, Madrid, inflicting a major defeat on the Socialist Party led by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, according to partial results.

According to the French Press Agency, the results of counting more than 50 percent of the ballot papers showed that the president of the outgoing region, Ioso, doubled her results compared to the last elections that were held in May 2019 and won 63 seats out of 136 that made up the local parliament, winning more than 43 percent of the vote.

But despite this, the Popular Party was unable to win an absolute majority of 69 seats and is therefore forced to form a coalition with the right-wing Fox Party, which won 13 seats, which was allied with Ayusu for two years.

For its part, the Socialist Party won 25 seats, or about 18 percent of the vote, which means it lost 11 seats compared to the last elections.

Despite the Corona pandemic, the voters, totaling about 5.1 million, flocked to elect members of the local parliament from among six competing parties, and the participation rate was estimated at 75 percent, an increase of ten points compared to the previous entitlement.

The strong mobilization reflects the importance of the elections at the national level, after the election campaign witnessed the emergence of messages threatening to kill candidates attached with bullets.
