The constitutional court had called for improvements to the climate law - now there is apparently already agreement in Angela Merkel's GroKo on the necessary consequences.

Berlin - Angela Merkel's * federal government is now setting the pace on the subject of climate: the reform of the climate protection law proposed by Environment Minister Svenja Schulze and Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz * (both SPD) is to be decided in the cabinet next week.

"There is a consensus in the government," said Schulze on Wednesday in Berlin.

Scholz emphasized that the government was in intensive talks.

“We will be in the cabinet next week with an ambitious climate protection law, but it is feasible,” he said.

Among other things, the package provides for Germany to become climate neutral by 2045.

Climate neutrality means emitting only as many greenhouse gases as can be bound again.

The package stands for more fairness between generations and more planning security for the economy, for example, said Schulze.

Merkel's spokesman announces climate “basic agreement”: law in cabinet next week?

On the way to climate neutrality in 2045, the aim is to achieve a CO2 saving of 65 percent by 2030 compared to 1990, said government spokesman Steffen Seibert on Wednesday in Berlin. There is a “basic agreement” in the coalition of CDU / CSU and SPD, he said at the federal press conference. “The common goal is to have a revised draft law in the cabinet as early as next week,” he confirmed.

The Federal Government is drawing the conclusions from the judgment of the Federal Constitutional Court on the Climate Protection Act.

Last week, the Karlsruhe judges obliged the legislature to regulate the reduction targets for greenhouse gas emissions for the period after 2030 in more detail by the end of 2022.

So far, the plan was to achieve climate neutrality, at which only as many greenhouse gases are emitted as can be bound again, not until 2050.

By 2030, CO2 savings should amount to 55 percent.

The climate law is one of several open construction sites of the federal government.

Climate laws in Germany: Söder rushes forward in Bavaria - and receives bitter criticism from the Greens

According to a spokesman for the Federal Environment Ministry, the legal re-sharpening is as good as finished.

"We're talking about doubling the pace of climate protection," he said.

Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) pushed ahead even further on Monday.

He had announced that he wanted to make Bavaria climate neutral by 2040 *.

A little later, however, there was already a coalition quarrel on the subject of wind power - the Landtag Greens attested in an interview with Merkur.de * a "loss of reality" and a pure "drama".

The party is now planning a new referendum.
