The supervisory board of the Facebook social networking site decided today to confirm the decision to close the account of former US President Donald Trump on the site and his account on Instagram.
Agence France-Presse quoted the council as saying in a statement that the former US president "created an environment in which there are serious risks of a slide toward violence" through his comments on January 6, which coincides with the day of the attack on the Capitol building.
"When Trump's messages were published, there was a clear and immediate danger of harm, and his statements in support of those involved in the riots gave legitimacy to their violent actions," the statement added.
At the same time, however, the council considered that “it was not appropriate for Facebook to impose an indefinite penalty that is not based on any criteria,” and asked the site to review during the next six months the decision imposed on January 7 “to take a proportionate response and justify it.
Last January, Facebook and Twitter banned Trump's accounts, shortly after he posted a video clip in which he repeated his allegations of rigging the US presidential election, in which his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, won.
