The G7 foreign ministers' meeting ended on May 5 and a joint communiqué was issued after the meeting.

In the 27-page communiqué with more than 12,000 words, the situation in Hong Kong is one of the focus of attention.

The participating countries called on China to abide by the high degree of autonomy enjoyed by Hong Kong, and at the same time stop suppressing those who defend freedom.

The Hong Kong issue is listed in point 15 of the communiqué, referring to the G7 reiterating its March 12 statement and continuing to be very worried about China’s decision to fundamentally erode the democratic elements of Hong Kong’s electoral system.

They called on China to act in accordance with its international commitments and legal obligations such as the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law, and to respect Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy and rights and freedoms.

The communique also urged the Chinese and Hong Kong authorities to stop targeting those who defend rights, freedom and democratic prices, maintain the independence of the judicial system, and protect cases from being transferred to mainland China.
