The company admitted it made a mistake in not recalling its machines from the market as soon as it received an "urgent warning" from an agency.

(CNN Business) -

The Peloton company recalled its Tread + and Tread treadmills on Wednesday, admitting it was wrong in refusing to accept the request from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The product recall includes some 125,000 treadmills.

The CPSC indicated that one child lost his life and another 70 have suffered injuries related to these devices.

But when the federal security agency issued a warning about the dangers last month, Peloton took the unusual step of refusing to remove them.

"I want to be clear, Peloton made a mistake in our initial response to the CPSC request," said Peloton CEO John Foley.

“We should have engaged more productively with them from the beginning.

For this, I apologize.

In a statement, CPSC Acting Chairman Robert Adler said the announcement was the “result of weeks of intense negotiations and efforts, culminating in a cooperative agreement that I believe is in the best interests of Peloton and of consumers'.

Wednesday's recall covers the $ 4,295 Tread +, as well as Peloton's cheaper Tread, which costs $ 2,495.

This latest machine has yet to go on sale in the United States.

Peloton removed both artifacts from its website on Wednesday.

This change comes more than two weeks after the US agency issued an "urgent warning" to users of the machine.

At the time, the CPSC said it was aware of at least 39 treadmill-related accidents, including "multiple reports of children being trapped, crushed and dragged under" the device.

The CPSC released a video showing a young child playing with an activated treadmill as the treadmill lifts off the ground and the child is trapped underneath.

The agency released details of other incidents, including a child who was injured when an adult was using it and "pets and objects" that were also sucked under the treadmill, suggesting "possible harm to the user. if it loses its balance as a result. '

Peloton rebutted the agency, saying at the time that its warning was "inaccurate and misleading."

In a severe setback, Foley admitted Wednesday that that decision was a mistake.

Foley said Peloton will work with the CPSC to "set new industry safety standards for treadmills" because the company has a "desire and responsibility to be an industry leader in product safety."

In response, Consumer Reports called the recall "welcome news," but the delay kept customers in jeopardy.

"The CPSC took a strong and principled stance on safety, and clearly that's what prompted Peloton to come to the table and agree to offer a full refund," said William Wallace, Consumer Reports safety policy manager, in a statement.

"It shouldn't have taken so much time and effort to get this product recalled."

The nonprofit consumer watchdog group initially called Peloton's response, or lack thereof, "outrageous."

Shares in Peloton hit a seven-month low, falling 12% on the news.

The company presents its financial results Thursday afternoon.
