Caritas Xiangqingxuan lost a USB finger containing the personal data of 121 PolyU students in September 2020. Some of the files were not encrypted, and some cases involved the information of helpers in the "PolyU Siege" incident, including their full names and identities. Certificate number and dialogue content, etc.
Former PolyU manager and Yau Tsim Mong District Councillor Li Ao-ran, who has been following up on the incident, said today (6th) that the Office of the Privacy Commissioner replied that Caritas had violated the guidelines and stored the names and contact information of the callers involved without authorization. In the USB, it is known that Caritas has taken serious follow-up actions, and at the end of last year, "Wei Li Online" was suspended and all the data returned to PolyU.
However, Li Aoran criticized that Caritas did not mention the compensation plan for the affected students and did not apologize to the public for the incident. The affected students have not yet decided on the next step, but they may collectively seek compensation from Caritas in the future.
Li Aoran pointed out that many help seekers who have lost their personal information have not yet taken the next step, but do not rule out that they will collectively claim compensation from Caritas.

Caritas suspends operations at the end of 2020 "Weili Online"
Li Aoran pointed out that last month, Caritas Xiang Qingxuan and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner respectively received letters from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, explaining the results of the investigation on the loss of the personal data of the help seekers by "Wei Li Online.
Among them, Caritas stated that it has sought independent opinions and improvement suggestions on work procedures, and will strengthen staff training. After returning relevant materials to PolyU at the end of 2020, the service of "Wei Li Online" has been suspended; as for the Privacy Commissioner’s Office, it said it was involved. The staff lost the memory (USB), and some information was not encrypted.

Li Aoran criticized that after more than half a year of investigation, the two organizations only "lightly led" the incident. They were dissatisfied that Caritas did not apologize to the students affected by the incident, nor did they make any disciplinary actions against the employees involved.
According to Caritas' reply to Qingxuan, the PCPD decided not to conduct further investigations into the case after a series of investigations, and questioned that the PCPD did not attach importance to the loss of personal data of students from the University of Liberty.
Li Aoran pointed out that many help seekers who have lost their personal information have not yet taken the next step, but do not rule out that they will collectively claim compensation from Caritas.
