Aid organizations, including Doctors Without Borders, had previously vehemently called for the patents to be suspended.

"In the short term, however, we are calling on all vaccine-producing countries to allow exports."
In the WTO dispute over the suspension of patents, the European Union had recently campaigned for more license agreements between developers and manufacturers. The change of course in the USA is likely to have put pressure on the EU, in which many large pharmaceutical companies are based.
The US trade representative Tai now said that the US would work within the framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to draw up an agreement to suspend patents.

As the world's largest economy, the United States has a key role to play in the negotiations.

Shares in vaccine manufacturers Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax fell sharply after Tai's announcement.
