- The European Union could follow in the footsteps of the United States and support the exemption from the protection of intellectual property on vaccines against covid-19.

This was announced on Thursday by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von de Leyen, who showed her willingness to "discuss any proposal that serves to respond to the health crisis effectively and pragmatically."

· "For this reason, we are ready to address how the United States' proposal to lift the intellectual property protection of covid-19 vaccines can achieve this goal," reported von de Leyen.

The announcement comes hours after the US Foreign Trade representative, Katherine Tai, announced via a statement that the country supports relaxing the patent rules on covid-19 vaccines.

According to Tai, the Government of Joe Biden firmly believes in intellectual property, but they believe that this measure is necessary to end the pandemic worldwide.

The measure would mean that these vaccines can be produced in several countries to speed up the inoculation process.
