US Secretary of State Anthony Blinkan is visiting Kiev today (Thursday) amid tensions with Russia, and has expressed Washington's commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty. "I am here for a very simple reason, to make clear on behalf of President Biden our firm commitment to friendship between the two countries," Blinkan said during his meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuliba.

Blinken will meet later today with President Volodymyr Zalansky, and alongside expressing solidarity with Ukraine he will urge him to adhere to the path of reforms and the war on corruption. US President Joe Biden promised Zalanski last month "uncompromising support" following an escalation in fighting in eastern Ukraine between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian army.

Moscow announced the withdrawal of its forces from the border on April 22, in a move that could pave the way for a possible summit between Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin next month. However, US officials told the New York Times that 80,000 Russian troops were still deployed on the border with Ukraine and the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow annexed in 2014.

Due to concerns about Russia's aggression, Ukraine is urging the United States and Europe to speed up its admission process to NATO. Blinken spoke with NATO foreign ministers about concentrating Russian forces.

Blinken said today that Washington "is committed to working with you and continuing to strengthen your democracy and build institutions that will advance your anti-corruption reforms."

The United States is Ukraine's most important ally since the annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of war in the Donbass region in 2014, in which some 14,000 people were killed.

However, relations plunged into crisis in 2019 when then-US President Donald Trump asked Mazlansky to investigate Biden and his son Hunter's business in Ukraine, and his government temporarily froze security assistance to Kiev.

These events even led to a dismissal lawsuit against Trump in Congress, and engagement resumed last week after federal agents raided the home and office of Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani as part of an investigation into his ties to Ukraine.
