Italy: Life imprisonment for 2 American tourists who murdered a policeman in Rome
A court has handed down the heaviest sentence to two young men from California, one of whom stabbed a police officer to death and the other assaulted a police officer outside the hotel where he was staying in 2019.
They argued for self-defense because they thought the policemen, who were without uniforms, were criminals, and would appeal the sentence.

Two American tourists were sentenced last night (Wednesday) to life in prison for the murder of a policeman in Rome near the hotel where they were staying in 2019, in a case that shocked Italy.
Finnegan Lee Elder, who was 19 at the time, admitted stabbing Mario Cressilo Raga in the early hours of July 26 of that time, while his friend Gabriel Christian Natala-Horth, then 18, confronted another police officer.
However, the two claimed to have acted in self-defense because they thought the policemen, who were not wearing uniforms, were criminals who tried to attack them after a failed drug deal.
The court rejected their testimony and imposed the heaviest sentence on them.
Under local law, inmates are allowed early release after 21 years if they have behaved properly behind bars.
The defense announced that it would appeal the sentence.
The two American tourists, who came to Italy from California, were also convicted of attempted extortion, assault, resisting a public figure and carrying an unjustified assault knife.
