The government has promoted e-payment in recent years. NWFB and Citybus stated today (6th) that the new e-payment system will cover more than 300 franchised bus routes across the entire line, and accept passengers to pay for their fares with QR Codes, including Support AlipayHK, Alipay and Cloud QuickPass.

The two bus companies said that they will activate the electronic payment system from next Sunday (9th), but passengers should be aware that the system is temporarily not benefiting from the transportation subsidy scheme and the RMB 2 ride discount.

NWFB and Citybus said that the new electronic payment fare meter will be activated at 2:30 in the morning on May 9, covering all franchised routes, accepting AlipayHK "Easy Travel Code", Alipay "Travel Code", and Cloud QuickPass "Travel Car code".

Passengers using Alipay and QuickPass must set the region to Hong Kong.

Operation instructions of electronic payment charging device:

Two bargaining meters, the fare meter is preset to adult fare, and the fare display screen has a touch option button, allowing children and the elderly to press the fare discount, and then scan the traffic QR code on the lens above the fare meter to pay. Once the payment is successfully completed, it will show "verification successful" and a voice of "Thank you" (adult charge) or "success" (children/senior charge).

Note, however, that using this payment system will not benefit from the public transport subsidy scheme, nor can you enjoy the $2 car discount for the elderly.

In addition, the Citybus (Hong Kong Island and cross-harbour bus network franchise) offers a $2 fare discount for 60 to 64 years old on Sundays and public holidays, which is not currently applicable to electronic payment tools other than Octopus.

However, the two bus companies also claim that using the same electronic payment tool account to pay, you can continue to enjoy the NWFB and Citybus bus interchange discounts, two-way sectional fare discounts, and the same-day round-trip discounts for the Citybus Airport Express.

The two bus companies also anticipate that they will expand their new electronic payment services to contactless credit cards and credit card mobile payments within this year.
