According to information, the Department of Health earlier learned that some people used a social media platform to sell weight loss products that claimed to be "fat burning tablets" but did not have a label.
The Department obtained a product sample for inspection, and confirmed from the government laboratory's test results that the sample contained the first poison "sibutramine" under the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance (Chapter 138).
The Department of Health is still investigating the incident and appeals to the public not to buy or consume weight loss products without labels.

"Sibutramine" has been used to suppress appetite. Since the drug increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, products containing "sibutramine" have been banned from use in Hong Kong since November 2010.
According to the "Ordinance", all pharmaceutical products must be registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Hong Kong before they can be legally sold on the market.
The illegal sale or possession of unregistered pharmaceutical products or Part 1 poisons is a criminal offence. The maximum penalty for each offence is a fine of $100,000 and imprisonment for two years.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health strongly urged members of the public not to buy products with unknown or suspicious ingredients, nor to consume products of unknown origin.
People who have purchased the above products should stop taking them immediately. If they feel unwell after taking the products, they should seek medical advice.
