Wolfratshausen - Slacklining is great fun for children and teenagers. The 15-meter-long belt strap is quickly stretched between two trees in the garden, whereupon it can be wonderfully balanced 50 centimeters above the lawn. That is not enough for Sebastian Egger: Not only does the 23-year-old Wolfratshauser use ropes with a length of 50 meters, which he spans at a height of 20 meters - he also performs a multitude of acrobatic figures on the so-called highline. He was recently certified that the master's student in computer science is obviously one of the experts: Egger took second place at the international Pandemic Open Freestyle Competition, where you could submit your best video clip between January 1st and February 14th . “It was completely unexpected for me. But it's also fun when you seewhat progress you are making, ”says the balance artist.

The first slackline was in front of the Geretsried indoor pool

It all started quite harmlessly with a simple slackline that Egger and a few friends from the parkour group of TSV Wolfratshausen had set up in front of the Geretsrieder indoor swimming pool. Because the former breakdancer and enthusiastic mountain climber found joy in balancing, he quickly became aware of like-minded people during his mechanical engineering studies in Stuttgart: "I was fascinated by the tricks and figures they could do." That was in February 2018. At some point, Egger decided To do the sport more intensively, I was out and about every weekend with my colleagues to train in suitable gorges in the Alpine region - including Switzerland. "Up until last year it was just a hobby," admits the Wolfratshauser. In the meantime he had obtained a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and added a master's degree in Munich. During the winter semester Egger completed the freestyle competition in Sardinia. With success, "because I have now trained almost full-time". And with the slackline manufacturer Slacktivity, there is now also a sponsor.

"You have to expose yourself to your fear again and again"

What do you have to consider if you want to go on the highline?

“In the beginning, it's all about walking on the rope,” explains the Wolfratshauser.

And who is not free from giddiness?

“He has to expose himself to his fear again and again and overcome it.” The be-all and end-all when it comes to security is the structure of the devices.

"If everything is done correctly during construction, nothing can ultimately happen," emphasizes the 23-year-old.

There were two or three fatal accidents in the scene, but in exceptional situations: "One climbed the rope shortly before a storm, another had attached it to a far too small concrete pillar." In any case, the athletes are on the highline with two safety lines attached: "It can of course happen that you get tangled up in it," says Egger.

Breathtaking: On the 50 meter long highline, Sebastian Egger completes up to 15 figures in a row at a height of around 20 meters.

The Wolfratshauser also invented a few tricks in this still young sport.

15 figures during a "combo"

The 23-year-old usually builds his performance - the “combo” - on a handful of long-practiced characters.

"Then there are three or four new tricks, so that in a competition there are around 15 figures in the end." A longer rope swing through much more slowly, and over a certain period of time there are fewer tricks.

Of course, you watch a few things from your colleagues live or on video.

“But I've also invented a trick or two myself that didn't exist before.” He likes to orient himself towards better slackliners, “because then you can improve yourself”.

There are also active people in his circle of friends here in the district who are definitely more talented than him: “But they are just not interested in taking part in competitions.” He has also intensified his training program.

Six units of yoga per week have been added, along with a regular core workout and sprint training for the benefit of the leg muscles.

An app with exercises and tricks is being developed

The global slackliner community is still manageable.

“But that's precisely why we maintain a lot of contacts with one another,” says Sebastian Egger happily.

He and a colleague from the USA are currently developing a highline freestyle app for the smartphone: “Among other things, there will be tips for exercises and tricks.” And to expand the slackliner community in the Oberland as well , the 23-year-old is looking for a suitable training ground: "Anyone who would like to provide a hilly area of 50 to 70 meters with a depth of at least ten meters is welcome to contact me."
