It is a tangle of small narrow streets where theater lovers like to get lost every July between two plays, during the Avignon Festival.
The rest of the year, some of these alleys stuck in the ramparts live on a drug economy that cost the life, Wednesday evening, to Eric Masson a 36-year-old policeman, shot dead by a thug during a control linked to drug trafficking.

Thursday afternoon, the municipal police of Avignon had sealed off the access, rue Râteau, to the place where the tragedy was tied.
Passers-by come to collect themselves in droplets.
Some brought a white rose that the police took away a few meters away to put them on the exact scene of the tragedy.
Others, pitchers of water to keep the flowers from fading.
"These police officers are there to protect us ... We can bitch about the PV, we forget too much that this job is first of all to play the skin for our safety while others sell death in sack"
