The ephemeral Grand Palais ready to open its doors

ARCHITECTURE-. Between the Military School and the Eiffel Tower, the structure which will host events in place of the Grand Palais, closed for renovations, will be inaugurated on June 9.

It arose

"at the speed of lightning"

on the lawn of Champ-de-Mars, and now waits June 9 to be inaugurated.

Built to compensate for the Grand Palais, closed for renovations, the ephemeral structure by Jean-Michel Wilmotte can be seen from afar.

In the shape of a white cross, it measures 10,000 m2.

"It's a UFO,"

jokes Chris Dercon, president of the RMN-Grand Palais.

Grand Palais: finished the architectural gesture, long live the restoration

The very short deadline was met thanks to a prefabricated structure which arrived by about fifty trucks.

“Everything was well ordered.

From the arrival of the 44 arches to the bolting of the elements together, to fix them on the piles, ”

says the architect.

The architectural result is spectacular, by the size of the volumes, with its huge bay windows opening onto the facade of the Military School, and in the Eiffel Tower-Trocadero axis.

But also by the presence of wood combined with a midnight blue arch giving the feeling of being in a soft and human-sized setting.

All in roundness, the Grand Palais
