The Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Tamam Raad, was briefed today on the reality of the water system in the province of Raqqa and the measures taken to confront the low level of the Euphrates River due to the robbery of the Turkish regime on large quantities of Syria’s share of the river’s water.

Minister Raad, during his tour to the eastern countryside of Raqqa, put the Shanan water pipeline project into service and visited the irrigation station in Kabira, and the drinking water stations in Al Sabkha, Shannan and Al Rahbi.

The Director of the Public Corporation for Drinking Water in Raqqa, Eng. Ahmed Al-Saleh, explained that the Shanan water line project, which has been put into service today, provides 400 cubic meters of water per hour with a line of 280 mm in diameter and forms an integrated system to feed the clusters of Shanan, Al-Rahbi and Al-Sabkha, linking them together to feed each other when necessary.

Minister Raad stated in a statement to reporters that the aim of the tour is to see the measures taken by the authorities of the Ministry of Water Resources to avoid the crisis resulting from the decrease in the water level in the Euphrates River, as the water course in the irrigation station in Al-Mughala, which irrigates about 5 thousand hectares, has also been taken. Several measures in drinking water stations by isolating the entrances to reach the water or lengthening the intake pipes to reach lower levels so that the water continues to reach the stations.

Minister Raad emphasized that the reason for the decline is the theft of the Turkish regime on the water, asking it to release water according to the fair share determined for both Syria and Iraq. He also called on the international community and international organizations to intervene in this matter to restore the flow of the Euphrates River to what it was, pointing out that the situation continues as it is. It threatens water security in Raqqa, Deir Ezzor and Hasaka.

In turn, the Governor of Raqqa, Abdul Razzaq Khalifa, indicated that the water situation in the liberated countryside of Raqqa governorate is good in terms of drinking water, as the specialized workshops have taken many measures in anticipation of any emergency and as for irrigation water, what is necessary has been taken to ensure the irrigation of the strategic wheat crop, which is in its last stage. The focus in the next stage will be on intensive crops with less water consumption.
