Persian Iran thus claims to be the standard bearer of the Shiites, while Saudi Arabia is the figurehead of the Sunnis.
This original dispute is also used by the two countries to extend their influence and defend their treasure (black gold).
Not to mention the role of America, Tehran's pet peeve but Riyadh's constant support.
This rivalry results in an indirect confrontation in several theaters of operations, where Iran defends the Shiites (from Syria to Yemen, via Bahrain and Iraq).
