The Iranian-Saudi match

2021-05-08T12:35:41.335Z

KEYS TO UNDERSTANDING - The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran, politico-theological rivals in the Middle East, have been clashing by proxy for years. With the election of Joe Biden, however, a (timid) relaxation seems to be looming.

1 - A proxy war

The antagonism between the two powers begins with a power dispute, dating back… to the 7th century AD!

When the Prophet dies, the question is who will be the future caliph.

A schism then occurs within the Muslim community: on the one hand, the companions of Mohammed (the Sunnis);

on the other, his descendants (the Shiites).

A

fitna

- rupture - which will become theological over time and which continues to divide Islam.

Persian Iran thus claims to be the standard bearer of the Shiites, while Saudi Arabia is the figurehead of the Sunnis.

This original dispute is also used by the two countries to extend their influence and defend their treasure (black gold).

Not to mention the role of America, Tehran's pet peeve but Riyadh's constant support.

This rivalry results in an indirect confrontation in several theaters of operations, where Iran defends the Shiites (from Syria to Yemen, via Bahrain and Iraq).
