The new crown pneumonia epidemic has lasted for more than a year. Except for the long suspension of classes, sports games, school trips and even outdoor teaching in different subjects have to be cancelled.

Unable to go out and experience it on the spot, the campus life of a class of students will undoubtedly be greatly eclipsed, and the effectiveness of learning will also be affected.

A Chinese teacher in a middle school in Tai Po thought of using VR technology to take students around the Tai Po community through the lens, adding games and multimedia elements, and using virtual reality to learn Chinese in an all-round way under the epidemic.

VR glasses incarnate the eyes of students

After the Easter holiday, many schools have resumed classes, and the school can arrange for no more than one-third of the students to return to school for half-day face-to-face classes.

On this day, a class of students in the classroom of Daguang Cihang Middle School of Buddhism sat in chairs shaking their heads and looking around. It turned out that they were looking at the images in the VR glasses.

Due to the epidemic situation, students who are studying in Secondary Two have rarely participated in teaching activities since they were promoted to secondary school. Fortunately, they have recently used the virtual reality language teaching by the Chinese University of Hong Kong Learning Science and Technology Center and the Jockey Club. The VR glasses planned to be provided will be conducted under the guidance of the teacher in a cultural inspection activity called "Tapu Tour" to experience extraordinary Chinese lessons.

During the activity, students used VR glasses to watch the scenes of Tai Po taken by the teacher in person earlier, including Fu Shin Street Market, Man Mo Temple, Railway Museum, Tai Po Market, etc. The teacher also added voice navigation in the VR scene, Question feedback, situational focus and other elements, students like to experience the environment, observe and complete the worksheet, also need to turn the screen to find special things and complete the multiple-choice questions in the VR environment. They only see that they are very engaged in playing. Under the restrictions of outdoor teaching, there is another experience.

Classmate: I have only experienced it in theme parks in the past

Xu Xiaomei pointed out that the most favorite thing in the itinerary was to visit the Wenwu Temple. He believed that in a city full of buildings, the antique temples are like historical testimony; Deng Haolin said that although he prefers science subjects, the VR-style Chinese class combines liberal arts The content and science and technology are more lively and fun than usual classrooms.

Student Chen Haotian said that in the past, he had only experienced VR technology in a roller coaster in a theme park. There were relatively few applications in daily life. He thought that only reading text in Chinese classes would be boring, and VR investigations were more interesting.

"I believe most people think that teaching Chinese is more traditional and doesn't rely on technology, but sometimes with the help of technology, students' learning interests can be maximized." Teacher Huang Xiaoshi, who is in charge of the plan, said that in response to the outbreak of the epidemic, VR technology is used for teaching. Afterwards, the plan was implemented with technical support from CUHK. There are currently two sets of teaching materials around Tai Po, one of which is designed, filmed and produced by Chinese teachers.

She said that after the use of VR technology, the level of involvement of students has increased, and it has also solved the difficulty of not being able to take students out under the epidemic. "In the past, students who learned to write descriptions would feel that the author wrote that I was really beautiful and loved the scenery. I feel uncomfortable. If you can take the students to revisit the route when teaching reading, you can feel it."

Liang Yingyuan, head of the Buddhist Daguang Cihang Middle School, pointed out that after the epidemic is conceived, the relevant technology can also be applied to other teaching. "I go out on weekdays. The classmates are very busy with their learning experience, so I hope I can use it in the future. Be a pre-learning (pre-learning) first.” Principal Liang pointed out that in the future, classmates can watch the VR scene at home first, so that field trips can be more focused and learning can be deeper and broader; she emphasized that she hopes to adopt It is "blended learning". Technology only helps, not completely replaces physical teaching.
