The Hong Kong Polytechnic University announced today (7th) that Zhao Ruheng has been appointed as the Vice-President (Research and Innovation) for a term effective from September 1, 2021.

Zhao Ruheng is a well-known "Hong Kong-based" scholar in Hong Kong's scientific research field. He graduated with first-class honours in mechanical engineering from the University of Hong Kong in 1988, and then went to the University of California at Berkeley for further studies before returning to Hong Kong to contribute to higher education.

He has worked at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for more than 20 years and is currently the Dean of the School of Engineering and Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hong Kong.

At 7 o'clock tonight (19th), a student of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University was accidentally injured by a chemical liquid during an experiment.

Zhao Ruheng is currently the Dean of the School of Engineering and Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hong Kong. He will receive media interviews from time to time.

He has represented the University of Hong Kong a few years ago, cooperating and discussing joint courses with Tsinghua University.

Before joining HKU, Zhao Ruheng worked at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for more than 20 years and served as the head of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from 2014 to 2018.

He is also an outstanding thermal and environmental engineering scholar.

PolyU stated that after Zhao Ruheng assumes the role of Vice President (Research and Innovation), he will be responsible for managing the planning and development of research and innovation of the university; enhancing the quality and influence of the university's scientific research and strengthening its leadership position in the region and internationally.

Zhao Ruheng obtained a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering with first-class honors from the University of Hong Kong in 1988, and a master's degree and doctorate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992 and 1994.

He is a senior member or academician of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (FASME), the British Society of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE), the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (FCIBSE), the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (FHKEng) and the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers (FHKIE). He is a Registered Professional Engineer (RPE) and a Chartered Engineer (CEng) of the British Engineering Council.
