Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas blamed Israel for the tensions in Jerusalem. He said he had instructed the Palestinian ambassador to the UN to demand that the Security Council convene to discuss the situation in the capital, amid clashes on the Temple Mount and protests against the evacuation of Palestinians.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad have threatened to comment on the events.

"Calls on the international community to stop Israeli aggression in Jerusalem," Abu Mazen said.

"Settler terrorism will only strengthen our adherence to our right to establish a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital."

A Hamas spokesman in Jerusalem said in response to clashes in the Temple Mount compound that "Israel will pay the price for the aggression and blatant violation of the right of Muslims to pray in their mosque."

Islamic Jihad Secretary-General Ziad Nahala joined in. "We cannot remain silent about what is happening in Jerusalem, and the enemy can expect our response at any moment," he said.
