The post of Secretary General of the UN, which the Norwegian Trygve Lie once described as
"the most impossible job in the world"
, is open to candidates for the next term (2022-2027).
Its current incumbent, Antonio Guterres, defended his intention to run for a second term in front of the 193 member states on Friday.
This re-election appears to be a given, the former Portuguese prime minister enjoying the official support of the five permanent member states of the Security Council (United States, Russia, France, China, Great Britain), as well as the movement of non-member countries. - aligned (ex-G77), represented by Algeria at the General Assembly.
