Delegations from Chile and Bolivia met with the purpose of normalizing bilateral relations between both countries, reported the Chilean Foreign Ministry.

The issue of access to the sea by Bolivia was on the table, but Chile reiterated that for them it is a matter "definitely resolved."

The Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this Friday that its delegations met with those of Bolivia on April 30 in the city of La Paz.

In order to normalize relations, they indicated that it was agreed to advance a roadmap for this year that includes matters of economic complementation, free transit, limits, culture and the environment, among others.

Both countries agreed to hold the XXIII Meeting of the Political Consultation Mechanism, which had not been held since 2010, and the XV Meeting of the Borders and Integration Committee.

They also defined the reestablishment of working groups and technical tables to address matters of common interest, according to the Chilean Foreign Ministry.

Exit to the sea

The statement indicates that the Bolivian delegation expressed their views on their claim to go out to sea. The Chileans reiterated that this is a matter "definitively resolved" by the Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1904 and the ruling of the International Court of Justice of 2018, which concluded that Chile did not have the obligation to negotiate sovereign access to the sea with its neighboring country.

For his part, the Bolivian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rogelio Mayta, said in a press conference from La Paz that they maintain their "historical and inalienable" position on access to the sea, but also "understanding the need to develop a bilateral relationship." with their neighbors they have been exploring various initiatives of mutual interest. He pointed out that both countries agree that constructive dialogue is the ideal instrument for understanding and integration and that bilateral cooperation "effectively helps peaceful coexistence."
