Dozens of Palestinians in the eastern part of Jerusalem are supposed to leave their homes under pressure from Israel - if necessary under duress. That is why there have been riots for days. The UN condemned the planned action.

The Israeli police said they had arrested 15 people in clashes in east Jerusalem.

In the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, stones were thrown at officials and vehicles, the police said on Friday morning.

Fireworks were also ignited.

Sheikh Jarrah is located in the Arabic-influenced eastern part of Jerusalem north of the old town. The neighborhood has been in focus for decades because of property disputes. Both Israeli settlers and Palestinians claim ownership there. Forced evictions of Palestinian houses had provoked repeated protests in recent years, some of them violent.

A Supreme Court decision on a case involving four Palestinian families is expected next week.

Supporters of the families in Sheikh Jarrah have been meeting for days to break the fast (iftar) outdoors.

According to the media, there have already been repeated clashes.

As the portal »ynet« wrote, settlers also sat at a table on a street on Thursday evening.

Among them was the right-wing extremist politician Itamar Ben Gvir.

The status of Jerusalem is one of the central issues in the Middle East conflict.

Israel claims Jerusalem as the "eternal and indivisible capital" for itself.

For their part, the Palestinians are sticking to their claim to East Jerusalem as their capital.

Since the beginning of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, there have been repeated tensions and violence in the West Bank and in the eastern part of Jerusalem. The UN special envoy Tor Wennesland was "deeply concerned" about this on Thursday. The planned evictions of Palestinian houses in the eastern part of Jerusalem may be a "war crime," said UN legal bureau spokesman Rupert Colville. "We urge Israel to immediately cancel all evictions."

Spokespersons for the foreign ministries of Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Great Britain said on Thursday that the acceleration of settlement activities and evictions in East Jerusalem, including Sheikh Jarrah, would “encourage efforts to build trust between the parties after the constructive resumption of the process Israeli-Palestinian cooperation «undermined.
