A guide to precautions for use

Today, household product labels are very complex. We don't really know how to use it. This concerns all household products. We must know at first glance whether to take precautions for use, for example put on gloves or ventilate the room,

”explained Minister Barbara Pompili.

This is the third label of its kind after the nutri-score which classifies foods from A to E according to their nutritional virtues, which came into force in 2017, and the carbon score, under discussion at the National Assembly as part of the of the climate law. As for its predecessor in the food industry, display will not be compulsory, at least initially, according to information provided by the Ministry of Ecology. However, it could be made bond after the first field returns.

This announcement comes within the framework of the publication on the same day of the fourth national health and environment plan (PNSE), a system which fixes every five years the environmental and medical risks to which the French are exposed.

An envelope of 90 million euros is allocated to finance research in this direction.

Protect human health and the environment

The details of the data taken into account for the preparation of the toxi-score are not yet known. The new indicator will be developed within the National Consumer Council, a body dependent on the Ministry of the Economy. The discussions will bring together representatives of household products professionals and consumers. The objective is to integrate information both on the health risks for the user and the risks for the environment linked to the use of these products.

For the more technical part, independent experts and various state agencies will be called upon to help, such as ANSES (National Agency for Food and Environmental Safety), Ineris (National Institute for Industrial Environment and Risks ) and Public Health France.
