In a meeting between the government and the opposition, it was
agreed to postpone
the date of the PASO and the general elections by one month.
With the new schedule, the Simultaneous and Mandatory Open Primaries will be held on
September 12
, while the general ones will be scheduled for November
14
.
The agreement has a
lock clause
that prevents modifying the calendar during this year.
"This law may not be modified or repealed during the current calendar year as it regulates a subjective public right of the political parties, fundamental institutions of the democratic system, to elect their candidates for the elective positions provided for in the National Constitution," he says. the text being debated this Friday at the meeting of the Interior Minister, Wado de Pedro, and the opposition.

The draft of the agreed project
Article 1. Modify the date of the open, simultaneous and compulsory primary elections (STEP), provided for by Article 20 of Law No. 26,571, establishing the second Sunday of September 2021 for the elections to be held.
Article 2. Modify the date of the general national elections, provided for by article 53 of Law 19,945 and its amendments, for one time, establishing the second Sunday of November 2021 for the elections.
Article 3. Modify the deadline for the registration of candidates and request for officialization of lists, stipulated in the first paragraph of Article 60 of Law 19,945 and its amendments, which is modified only once, by way of exception and only for the 2021 national elections, which it will be up to forty-five (45) days prior to the election.
Article 4. The deadline for the start of the electoral campaign, stipulated in the second paragraph of article 64 bis of Law 19,945 and its amendments, shall be modified only once, by way of exception and only for the 2021 national elections, which will be forty-five five (45) days before the date of the general elections.
Article 5. Exceptionally adapt the dates established in the current electoral schedule, in accordance with the provisions of articles 1 and 2 and the modifications of deadlines established in articles 3 and 4 of this law Article 6.
