Dear subscribers,
The terraces reopen this Saturday in Brussels.
The Belgians are ahead of us by a big week and they should be happy about it.
But already,
Le Soir
anticipates a very mixed or even frankly disappointing result.
Between two thirds and three quarters of establishments in the capital will remain closed, according to estimates from the “Horeca” federation (which represents hotels, restaurants and cafes).
Worse: among the Walloons, only 15% of cafes and restaurants should reopen this weekend.
There are several reasons for this sluggish restart.
First, many restaurants simply don't have a terrace.
Added to this is a dumpster of standards that will knock out any good will coffee maker: gauge system, tables 1.5m apart and occupied by four people maximum, end of service at 10pm… Impossible to recoup its costs in these conditions.
Especially since over time, restaurant owners have learned to be wary of government announcements.
