Holzkirchen

- It has been proven that the market square has potential: over the dark winter months it is transformed into an illuminated work of art every evening. A place that you love to pass and even a popular photo opportunity. Over the summer, art should now light up the square: from the end of July to the end of September 2021, it should offer space for art in public spaces. "We want to continue a series that is supposed to become tradition", explained Mayor Christoph Schmid. The prelude would have been the crib path in the run-up to Christmas and the “Art in the shop window” project by the Kulturvision association. The town hall chief sees the project as a support for artists from the region who, as self-employed soloists, are one of the most severely affected by the restrictions due to the corona pandemic.

The area in front of the town hall around the fountain and the space between the maypole, advertising pillar and war memorial are available as playgrounds, which can be temporarily designed or used.

To this end, the market town is launching a competition: Artists from the Miesbach district, individually or as a group, are to develop concepts and apply to the Holzkirchen town hall.

The winning design, selected by a jury, should be implemented by July 31st.

The municipality provides a maximum of 7500 euros for material costs and artist salaries.

“We deliberately kept the description open,” explains Eva-Maria Schmitz from the City Hall Promotion Department, who initiated the project.

The community wants to be completely open, also for ideas beyond sculpture, which classically occupies the spaces for art in public space.

The artists "are free to paint, coat, clad, effectively illuminate the surfaces in question, to cover them with different materials, to plant them or to stage them entirely differently," says the tender. The motto is "Wooden churches are colorful - tradition and modernity". However, the jury also attaches great importance to sustainability when making their selection. “In the end, it shouldn't just be a big pile of rubbish,” says Schmid. And the concepts must take into account that the marketplace does not take its name by chance: the Green Market on Saturday and Wednesday must still be able to take place. And the access to the Herdergarten cannot be blocked either.

In addition to the temporary premium location on the market square, there is also a second competition for the design of a concrete wall on the forecourt of the Kultur im Oberbräu - not temporarily, but permanently.

"When the wall was built, the idea behind it was to design it," explains Ingrid Huber, head of the cultural center.

An area 4.50 meters wide and 2.50 meters high is available for this.

The project is particularly appealing to her because it is created in public space: "It's nice because people can watch the work of art being created - whatever is being done."

Applications can be submitted to the town hall by May 31st.

"We hope that we will hit the nerve of the times and that the artists will want to take part," says Schmitz.

The advertisement with all the details and the application forms can be found on the municipality's website.
