Iran on Saturday urged the United Nations to condemn what it called an
Israeli "
war crime
" in Jerusalem, the scene of violent clashes between Palestinians and forces of the Hebrew state.
More than 175 Palestinians and six Israeli policemen were injured on Friday, most on the Mosque Plaza, in the biggest clashes in recent years in occupied East Jerusalem.

Iran "
condemns the attack on the Al-Aqsa mosque (...) by the military regime occupying
" Jerusalem, the foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement. "
This war crime once again proves to the world the criminal nature of the illegitimate Zionist regime
," he added. Iran "
calls on the United Nations and other institutions linked to it to act (...) to face this war crime
".
Clashes erupted Friday between Palestinians, who threw projectiles, and the Israeli police who used stun grenades and shot protesters with rubber bullets, according to an AFP photographer.
Clashes also took place in the nearby neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, where daily protests against the possible eviction of Palestinian families in favor of Israeli settlers have escalated in recent days into clashes with the police.

The United Nations on Friday called on Israel to end all forced evictions of Palestinians to East Jerusalem, warning that its actions could constitute "
war crimes
." The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali Khamenei said on Friday that Israel was "
a terrorist base
" to fight, on the occasion of "
Jerusalem Day
", celebrated annually by Iran in solidarity with the Palestinians.
