Due to a change in the law by the federal government, all driving licenses must be exchanged.

Depending on the year of birth or the year of issue, certain deadlines apply.

District

- The change in the law applies to the whole of Germany and is not something that the vehicle registration office of the Weilheim-Schongau district office simply came up with, explains Wolfgang Mini, head of the "Transport" department in the district office.

The old driver's licenses have been exchanged for a long time.

But the action is rather slow, as Sabrina Loy, head of the driver's license office, says.

"About 500 citizens have exchanged their driver's license for nine months." Loy cannot say exactly how many district citizens have to exchange their rags.

Because not everyone got their driver's license here too.

For newcomers, the data is still with the authorities in the place where the test was taken, says Mini.

Check card driver's licenses without a validity date must be exchanged

The old pink and green paper driving licenses are particularly affected by the obligation to exchange.

But older card driving licenses are also affected.

However, only if they were issued before January 19, 2013 and therefore do not have an imprinted validity date.

But don't panic, not everyone has to immediately exchange their driver's license for a new, forgery-proof EU ID card.

For the exchange of the paper driving license, the deadline depends on the year of birth of the owner, for the card driving license on the date of issue (see box).

These are the deadlines for the mandatory exchange of the old driver's license

January 19th is the cut-off date of the respective year for all driver license exchanges. For those who still have an old pink or green

The latest deadline is January 19, 2022. This affects those who still have a paper license and were born between 1953 and 1958.

With this group "we expect around 7000 exchanges", explains department head Mini.

It is extremely important that the people concerned make an appointment for this year and not only at the end of the deadline.

Driving licenses should not only be exchanged in Weilheim

Since the driver's license can be handed in at both registration offices in Weilheim and Schongau, Mini asks citizens not only to drive to Weilheim.

“On the website there is a breakdown of the municipalities”, which shows which one belongs to which registration office.

Around two thirds would be Altlandkreis Weilheim, one third Altlandkreis Schongau.

In Weilheim, the entrance area of the District Office in Stainhartstrasse was even rebuilt for the exchange: Directly opposite the main entrance there is a red counter where the exchange takes place so that not everything romps around in the registration office itself.

In order to be able to exchange the old driver's license, a valid identification document, a current biometric passport photo that should not be older than one year, the driver's license and the application fee of 30.30 euros are required.

In the case of old paper driving licenses that were not made in the district, the employees of the admissions office still need a copy of the index card.

"You can call the authority that issued your driver's license and they'll send it to us," explains Loy.

The application for this copy of the index card "should be applied for close to the deadline" so that it does not lie around forever at the vehicle registration office, according to Mini.

Driver's license exchange: appointments must be made

Due to the corona pandemic, an appointment must be made for the mandatory exchange of the driver's license.

The best thing to do is to go to the District Office's website (www.weilheim-schongau.de) under "Online appointment allocation".

Appointments can also be made and questions answered via the specially set up service number 0881 / 681-1555 or by e-mail (fahrerlaubnisbehoerde@lra-wm.bayern.de).

For more information, flyers are also available in the individual municipalities in the district.

“We asked the municipalities to display or hang up the flyers and posters at the residents' registration office,” explains Mini.

Those who cling to their old driver's license can take it home with them

For many citizens it is important that they can take their old driver's license back with them.

“Of course that works,” says Loy, the head of the license department.

The old one is canceled, but is still valid for two months.

Because: The new EU driving license is not available immediately at the appointment in the district office.

“It takes an average of three weeks for it to arrive”.

It is sent by post, so that only a personal appointment is required on site.

The new, forgery-proof EU driving license is then valid for 15 years from the date of issue.

Anyone who refuses to exchange the vehicle and still drives with the old driver's license after the deadline has expired is committing an administrative offense that costs around ten euros.
