Perez finally passes Ricciardo

Outside at turn 1, Sergio Perez made a superb maneuver to get rid of Ricciardo.

Here he is fifth but unfortunately far from the head.

His next goal: Charles Leclerc sixteen seconds ahead of him.

at 16:09

Hamilton less than twenty seconds from Verstappen

The Briton aligns the gun times.

He signs lap record on lap record and comes back less than twenty seconds from the leader.

at 16:06

Gaps between leaders

23 laps to cover and Verstappen has ten seconds ahead of Bottas and 22 over Hamilton now.

The latter will come back very strong.

at 16:04

Hamilton in the pits

Thunderclap.

Mercedes' stroke of genius?

Hamilton stops a second time at the end of the 42nd lap.

He leaves with medium compounds.

But Verstappen cannot stop otherwise he will emerge behind the seven-time world champion.

Hamilton came out third.

Little Perez Mistake

Chasing Ricciardo, the Mexican made a small mistake after turn 1 and took off.

Ricciardo breathes.

at 16:02

Hamilton still a second from Verstappen

The Briton now stumbles on Verstappen.

Despite the DRS, the Briton loses too much speed in the last corner before the home stretch and cannot attack Red Bull for the moment.

at 15:58

Ocon and Norris pass Raikkonen

The Finn retreats and finds himself tenth.

Ocon is eighth while Norris is ninth.

at 15:55

DRS for Hamilton

The gap is under the second between the two leaders.

For the first time this Sunday, Hamilton entered the DRS zone.

Its first activation did not yield anything.

Verstappen is under pressure.

at 15:54

Ocon still in the points

The Frenchman is currently ninth and is preparing to attack Kimi Raikkonen, in agony with his tires.

Behind him, Norris is three seconds away.

at 15:52

A second between Verstappen and Hamilton

The Dutchman suffers with the medium rubber.

Conversely, the Mercedes seems to fly with this set of tires.

The gap is now one second and Hamilton arrives in the DRS zone.

at 15:51

Hamilton hits Verstappen

The seven-time world champion has just taken two seconds in two laps from the leader.

Two seconds separate the two pilots.

at 15:49

Perez in Ricciardo's exhausts

As before the stops, Perez is stuck behind Ricciardo.

He has the DRS and will have to quickly overtake it.

at 15:48

Best lap for Hamilton

The Briton has just set the fastest lap in the race: 1: 21.276.

He begins his ascent.

at 15:47

Raikkonen still no stopping

He is the last on the track not to have passed through the pits.

He was also the only driver on the grid to start in medium tires.

The Finn is seventh with his Alfa Romeo.

at 15:46

Hamilton and Leclerc in the pits, Verstappen in the lead

At the end of the 28th lap, Lewis Hamilton stops.

Four laps after Verstappen.

The save is average and he emerges in mediums five seconds behind the Dutchman.

For Leclerc, the stop is good but the Monegasque comes out behind Bottas and temporarily loses the podium.

Hamilton leader

The Briton has stayed on track and says his tires are fine in the end.

He has lost time behind Mazpepin but Hamilton is on a one-stop strategy while Verstappen appears to be on a two-stop strategy.

at 15:39

Verstappen in the pits

Disaster at Red Bull.

Under pressure from Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen plunged into the pits at the end of lap 24. But for once, the Austrian team completely missed their stop with more than four seconds of immobilization.

It comes out fifth, with medium compounds, but with lost time.

The Briton returned to the exhausts of the leader who suffered with his tires.

He's going to have the DRS in the next straight.

at 15:38

Bottas stops!

Blocked behind Leclerc, the Finn stops at the end of the 23rd lap.

He abandons the tender to leave with Mediums.

He was sixth ahead of Raikkonen and ten seconds behind Perez.

Alonso and Vettel stop

Out of the points, the two drivers, eleventh and twelfth before the stops, jumped together in the pit lane.

Good stop for Alonso who comes out in front of Gasly.

On the other hand, a bad stop for Vettel who emerges behind Gasly.

Bad deal from Aston Martin.

at 15:35

Bottas complains about the tires

Both Mercedes are experiencing the same problem with significant wear of the rear gums.

at 15:32

Gasly in the pits

At the end of the 18th lap, the Frenchman takes his five-second penalty and changes his tires.

He abandons the tender for the mediums.

A two-stop strategy for the Habs?

In any case, he left last.

at 15:32

Perez always sixth

The second Red Bull does not go back.

Sergio Perez is blocked behind Ricciardo and despite the DRS he cannot find the opening.

at 3:30 p.m.

Hamilton complains about his gums

More than a second from Verstappen, the Briton suffered from the wear of his tires which were more deteriorated than those of Verstappen.

at 15:28

One stop strategy holds the rope

The cooler temperatures over Barcelona and the safety car mean that the teams are almost all on a one-stop strategy.

The soft tires should go further than expected on this first stint.

at 15:26

Ocon under pressure from Sainz

The Frenchman is currently defending his seventh place.

He is under pressure from Carlos Sainz who owns the DRS in a straight line.

at 15:23

Bottas unable to pass Leclerc

Incredible, but the Finn loses a considerable amount of time behind the Ferrari of Monaco.

He now has the DRS which may help him but nothing reassuring for the second Mercedes.

at 15:22

Gasly penalized

The Frenchman, badly positioned on the starting grid, has just been penalized with five seconds.

He is currently thirteenth and his teammate has just retired.

Dirty weekend for AlphaTauri.

at 15:20

No overtaking to report but now Lewis Hamilton is in the DRS zone.

at 15:19

at 15:14

The positions frozen behind

The drivers are struggling to keep up with each other on the Spanish track, which generates few overtaking so far.

at 15:13

Hamilton returns to Verstappen

The difference is slightly greater than a second between the two pilots.

Hamilton is missing a few tenths to enter the DRS area.

at 15:10

Bottas blocked behind Leclerc

The Finn is losing a lot of time behind the Ferrari.

At the moment, he's not sure he can help Hamilton in the fight with Verstappen.

at 15:09

Ocon and Gasly lost places

The two French have lost one position as the Alpine d'Ocon is seventh while the Alphatauri de Gasly is 13th.

at 15:06

100th Grand Prix for Verstappen

Barcelona are doing well for him.

For his first Grand Prix with Red Bull in 2016, Max Verstappen became the youngest driver to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix. The Dutchman was 18 years old and 227 days old at the time.

Five years later, the Batavian prodigy will take the start of his hundredth race ... in Barcelona.

With a victory at stake?

at 14:52

Leclerc well placed, Ferrari in ambush

The Monegasque could not hope for better than a fourth place on Saturday. As often, he managed to get the best out of his car. And after qualifying, Charles Leclerc was of course satisfied.

Ferrari also besides since Carlos Sainz signed the sixth time.

A nice group shot for the Scuderia which must score big points this Sunday.

It will initially count on Leclerc, who seemed more at ease with the pace of the race during practice, but Sainz had to make up for his eleventh place in Portugal.

... Gasly disappoints

Eliminated in Q2 with the twelfth fastest time, Pierre Gasly was disappointed on Saturday. The AlphaTauri, which lacks stability, has not shown any encouraging signs this weekend for the moment.

But the French, outside Q3 for the first time in seven races, has the advantage of being able to choose his tires at the start while the first ten will start on soft tires.

This will surely be the opportunity for the other Normand to go on medium or hard in order to make a first long relay.

This could be an advantage but it will also be necessary to take care of its departure in the traffic with in particular a first tumultuous turn.

Oconimpresses ...

For the third time this season in four races, it is Esteban Ocon who has signed the best qualifying of Alpine.

Very comfortable as in Portimao last Sunday, Esteban Ocon slammed the fifth time on Saturday, while Fernando Alonso was satisfied with the tenth fastest time.

A feat that says a lot about the form of the French at the moment.

He is confident and at ease with his car, which allows him to post very good results.

On Sunday, he can aim for a top 6 and score big points.

F1, too, is starting to open its doors again.

In Portugal, last Sunday, we had already had the pleasure of seeing fans in the stands of Portimao and it started again in Barcelona.

For the Spanish Grand Prix, 1000 spectators are present.

How good is it to see some fans in the grandstand ?!

Verstappen alone against the Mercedes?

SergioPerez, only eighth, Max Verstappen, second, will therefore be surrounded by Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas (3rd).

This could be decisive for the rest of the Grand Prix.

If the Mexican manages to quickly climb back into the top 4, Mercedes will be more bothered in terms of strategy.

But if Perez does not come back, Verstappen will be alone against two Mercedes and the game of strategies, the Red Bull will be trapped.

Unless the Dutchman is in the lead at the first corner… and there, the physiognomy of the race would then become very interesting.

Lewis Hamilton's 100epole

100 POLES! I can’t even begin to describe how this feels. I can’t thank the team and everyone back at the factory enough for everything they’ve done to help us secure this incredible milestone. I feel so humbled and very grateful. This feels like my first win all over again 🙌🏾💯 pic.twitter.com/KkCgShdhq2

Very cloudy weather in Barcelona

What if the rain makes its appearance?

It is a real possibility.

The sky is very threatening over the Montmelo circuit and showers are expected throughout the day in Barcelona.

In any case, the temperature of the track has dropped significantly compared to Saturday with no less than ten degrees in months.

The change at turn 10

The Montmelo circuit is well known to pilots as they come to do winter testing here in Barcelona.

But it experienced a modification to turn 10, which marks the end of sector 2, with a more coated curve and less braking than in the past.

This allows the drivers to take more speed in the last part of the circuit but potentially removes a nice passing zone, especially since the Catalan circuit there are already few.
