Train traffic between Ashkelon and Netivot was stopped today (Sunday) due to a fire that spread in the Sderot area, where the station was also temporarily closed to service. Later, an incendiary balloon was found on the railway tracks in the city. Firefighters said at least 35 fires broke out in the south during the day, some likely as a result of additional incendiary balloons, and others related to the heavy fire.
"At this stage, the firefighters from the Fire and Rescue Service to Israel are operating with increased forces and with the assistance of the JNF, RTG, Rabshakehs, volunteers and the assistance of IDF soldiers in several fires throughout the Southern District," the fire services said. Shmulik Friedman, commander of the southern district of the fire department, conducted a situation assessment on a Musk patrol over the fire areas, and passed a situation picture to the forces operating in the area. The main burning point at this stage is Kibbutz Bari, where large parts of the reserve were burned, according to the Parks and Nature Authority. Other places include Moshav Noam, where the fire also spread widely, Carmiya, scorers, Erez and Rahat.
The fire brigade called on the public to avoid "long hiking trails due to the extreme weather conditions," emphasizing that lighting fires in nature reserves and national parks, parks and forests of the JNF is prohibited.
