Waking up with fanfare this morning for the inhabitants of Montmartre.
The howling sirens of the firefighters sounded at the stroke of 9 am, after the call of a resident of the rue Nobel (18th century).
A fire had broken out in the stairwell at 5, rue Nobel.
The firefighters, who were there in a few minutes, discovered a Haussmannian building in the grip of flames.
“The fire in the stairwell had spread upstairs because residents had fled, leaving their apartment doors open.
This caused a draft which raised the flames, ”explains Captain Philippe Schupp of the Champerret barracks (17th century).
About twenty fire trucks were dispatched to the scene to carry out several rescue operations.
Nine residents (including two children) trapped in their apartments where the fire was spreading were evacuated by ladders while nine others were taken out of the burning building with escape hoods on their heads.
The fire went up to the 8th floor
Ten people poisoned by the smoke had to be evacuated to hospitals.
"The rapid intervention prevented the fire from spreading to other buildings, but the fire had still had time to rise to the 8th floor of the building," reports the BSPP.
The Haussmann-style building which has 18 apartments had been completely renovated in 2013. The origin of the fire, which required the intervention of about sixty firefighters, is unknown at the moment.
The central laboratory of the police headquarters went to the site at the end of the morning to take samples and open an investigation.
