The Education Association conducted a questionnaire survey earlier to understand the future changes in manpower in the education sector.

The survey found that 40% of the teachers interviewed intend to leave the education sector in Hong Kong, and nearly two of them have plans to resign or retire early.

The proportion of respondents aged 21 to 30 who intend to leave the education sector in Hong Kong is as high as 47.7%.

When asked about the main reason for choosing to leave, 70% said that it was "increasing political pressure."

The Education Association used online questionnaires to interview teachers and principals of secondary schools, primary schools, kindergartens and special schools from April 29 to May 5, and a total of 1,178 responses were received.

Two adults plan to leave the education sector in Hong Kong

The survey pointed out that 40% of teachers intend to leave the education sector in Hong Kong, and nearly 20% of them plan to resign or retire early.

The results also found that two other adults said they "tend to leave, but they have no specific plan."

When asked when the interviewee expected to leave the education sector, one adult indicated that he had or will leave during or at the end of the school year.

According to the Education Association, of the 474 interviewees, 70 adults (337) said that "increasing political pressure" was the main reason for leaving.

More than 40% of senior teachers plan to leave

The Education Association analyzed the rank ratio of respondents who intend to leave the education sector in Hong Kong and found that the ratios of primary school directors and secondary school directors are as high as 48.1% (25 persons) and 51.2% (43 persons).

In addition, the proportion of respondents with a seniority of 21 to 30 years who intend to leave the education sector is as high as 47.7%.

The Educational Association stated that there may be a middle-level manpower gap in the education sector in the future.

The data also revealed that in the rank of principal or deputy principal, a total of 15 people in elementary and secondary schools planned or tended to leave.

The Education Association stated that when asked about the main reason for their choice to leave, among the 474 respondents, 70% (337) said that "increasing political pressure" was the main reason for leaving, and more than 50% and 30% said " Dissatisfied with the social conditions of Hong Kong" and "dissatisfied with Hong Kong's education policy".

The Education Association continued that some of the interviewees who tend to leave the education sector in Hong Kong mentioned that the reasons for leaving include "the quality of Hong Kong education is straight down", "non-educational professionals serve as directors... administrative chaos and disrespect for frontline workers." , "Politics override the professional atmosphere", political criticism of the education sector and requirements to install video cameras in classrooms.

Teachers interviewed who tend to stay low said that the political situation is poor, and they must stay in their positions. They teach young children the right way and have the responsibility to stick to their posts, so that students understand the truth.

The survey also pointed out that up to 80% of the respondents were dissatisfied with the social and political environment, and 78% were dissatisfied with education and policies.

Worried about not picking up

Feng Weihua, the president of the Education Association, worries that if the education sector continues to drain, and experienced teachers leave the fruit of education, it will result in a loss of education and students.

He asked the government and individual establishment legislators to stop exerting political pressure so that the education sector could not be affected by political factors and provide students with education that suits them.

Ye Jianyuan, vice chairman of the Education Association, also pointed out that a stable teaching team is extremely important for maintaining the quality of teaching and passing on experience. He emphasized that the government must listen to teachers' opinions and improve governance and education policies.
