The Ministry of Culture called the “General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums” the researcher and archaeologist Qassem Tuyer, who died today at the age of eighty-five.
The deceased was born in Deir Ezzor in September 1936, where he obtained a high school diploma, then continued his university education in Germany, studying history and archeology, and taught at the University of Damascus in the Faculties of Fine Arts, Architecture and Arts, Department of History.
Tuyer worked in the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums between 1975 and 1994 and was director of training and scientific research. He participated with many excavation missions, including important archaeological sites in Raqqa and Ras Ibn Hani. He was also director of the two missions of Hergla and Qasr al-Banat and has many books and researches in archeology as well. He translated many books and research papers from German, Italian and French languages, and after his retirement, he remained in contact with the Directorate of Antiquities and Museums to provide scientific advice.
The deceased received several important medals for his scientific activity, including the Italian Order of Merit of the first class in 1978 AD, as well as the award of the Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Science of the Arab League for the best translation from a European language into Arabic in 1983.
