Six people were killed and six others injured in a suicide bombing on Sunday (May 9th) against a police station in Mogadishu, police said.

The attack occurred in Warberi, in the south of the city, on the busy Maka al-Mukaram road.

"The explosion was so powerful that it destroyed parts of the building,"

Somali police chief Ibrahim Mohamed told AFP.

Traffic on this road has been temporarily closed by police, witnesses said.

"Six people including four civilians and two police officers were killed in this attack which targeted the police station," police

spokesman Sadik Dudishe told AFP.

Among the victims is a police commissioner who is suspected to have been the target of the attack.

Six other people were injured, the spokesperson added.

The attack has not been claimed but generally the attacks in the Somali capital are carried out by the group Al-Shabab ("the young people" in Arabic).

Al-Shabab has wanted to overthrow the Somali federal government since 2007 and regularly launches attacks against the government targeting civilians as well.
