White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan spoke by telephone today (Monday) with his Israeli counterpart Meir Ben Shabbat and asked that the Israeli government "take the necessary steps" to maintain calm during the Jerusalem Day events that will take place today, the White House said in a statement.

According to an Israeli official who details the details of the conversation, Ben Shabbat made it clear to Sullivan during their conversation that Israel believes that the United States and the rest of the world should not intervene in the crisis in Jerusalem.

Today, a flag march is expected to take place on the streets of the Old City of Jerusalem, which is a significant hotspot with the potential for escalation.

The White House statement said that Sullivan had expressed great concern to Ben-Shabbat about the clashes in Jerusalem and especially on the Temple Mount.

He also expressed the United States' concern about the possible evacuation of Palestinian families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

Sullivan condemned during the conversation the rocket fire and incendiary balloons from Gaza.
