Decision of appeasement or oil on the fire?

The future will tell.

Israeli justice announced on Sunday the postponement of a key hearing, which was scheduled for Monday, devoted to the fate of Palestinian families threatened with eviction by Israelis in East Jerusalem, a case at the heart of muscular protests in the Holy City.

"In light of the current context, and at the request of the Attorney General, the hearing scheduled for tomorrow has been canceled," said the Ministry of Justice in a statement, specifying that a new date would be announced in "the thirty next days ".

Dozens of Palestinians and Israeli police have been injured in recent days in clashes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem, where Palestinian families face eviction in favor of Israeli settlers. At the heart of the dispute: the land ownership of land on which are built several houses in which four Palestinian families live, that is to say about thirty people.

Earlier this year, the Jerusalem District Court ruled in favor of Jewish families claiming ownership of the land, highlighting the purchase of the land by Jews before the creation of Israel in 1948. A small one Jewish community lived in the area of today's Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood before the 1948 war, after which the eastern part of Jerusalem came under Jordanian control.

According to Israeli law, if Jews can prove that their family lived in East Jerusalem before the 1948 war, they can ask for their "right to property" to be restored to them.

However, there is no such law for Palestinians who lost their property during the war.

And the decision of the court in Jerusalem angered Palestinians who have contested it regularly since during demonstrations in the neighborhood, punctuated by clashes with the police.

Hamas, in power in Gaza, in particular threatened to carry out attacks against Israel in the event of an unfavorable decision in this affair, also closely followed by foreign chancelleries.
