Wells Fargo: Rory McIlroy finds his way back to success

After a year and a half without a win, the Northern Irishman once again lifted a trophy by winning Wells Fargo for the third time. Auspicious before the USPGA.


Former world No. 1 Rory McIlroy put an end to eighteen months of famine on the North American Tour (PGA) by winning the Wells Fargo Championship for the third time after the 2010 and 2015 editions, Sunday in Charlotte (Caroline North).

In windy conditions on the Quail Hollow course, the 32-year-old Northern Irishman surrendered a 4th card to 68, three strokes under par.

Enough to total -10 and beat the Mexican Abraham Ancer at once.

This 19th USPGA title is the first since the WGC HSBC Champions in Shanghai in November 2019 and it won it two weeks before the PGA Championship, the second Grand Slam round of the year.

"It's awesome.

It's never easy to win here.

I have the impression that it has been so long since this victory in China in 2019. The world is a completely different place than it was before, ”commented the four-time winner of Majors, referring to the coronavirus pandemic.

Now coached by Pete Cowen, the former world number one will be one of the favorites in two weeks at Kiawah Island, where he won in 2012 at the USPGA.

Besides Ancer, McIlroy edged Norwegian Viktor Hovland and American Keith Mitchell, who shared 3rd place on two strokes, Gary Woodland, winner of the US Open in 2019, finishing 5th on three strokes.
