2021-05-13T06:02:17.176Z

Disturbed by the slowness of negotiations for his extension this winter, the world champion invited his team to discuss before the summer break for a possible new contract after 2021.

This time Lewis Hamilton will not have the patience. More than ever at the top of his game, the winner of the Spanish Grand Prix this Sunday brought his total points to 94, his best mark after four races. A new sign if it were necessary that the appetite and motivation of the 36-year-old Briton remain intact. So, it is only natural that he has already mentioned a possible extension with Mercedes, with whom he will be at the end of his contract at the end of the season. “We don't want to rush anything but I think we have to start discussing and studying the possibilities,” said the seven-time F1 world champion at a press conference. Negotiations are never easy, so I hope we can get down to a table quickly, as long as it doesn't disrupt my work on the track. We have 19 races left and it would be great to know more about the future before the summer break. ”

Insatiable winner (98 GP, 100 pole positions), as evidenced by his victorious overtaking over Max Verstappen in Catalonia a few laps from the finish, the native of Stevenage draws a precise timetable in order to avoid speculation and the turmoil caused by the 'waiting for its extension last year. A one-year extension finally enacted… in early February, less than two months before the first round of the season in Bahrain. “We don't want to end up in the position we were in in January and February,” he explained. It ruined my winter and I'm sure it upset Toto (Wolff) as well, who couldn't clear his head and disconnect. It was as if we hadn't had any rest. I think we have to be reasonable. ”

The ball is now in the court of Mercedes and its boss Toto Wolff, known to be very close to its flagship driver.

But the latter knows it, the negotiations promise to be complicated, especially as Mercedes is preparing its future in parallel, around his compatriot George Russell or even his great rival Max Verstappen.

One thing is certain, Hamilton has no desire to stop next December.
