Disposable packaging is prevalent, clogging trash cans and polluting the environment.

The alternative: a reusable deposit system.

That is what the Greens propose in Unterhaching.

Unterhaching

- Eight cents deposit is available in the supermarket or beverage store for a glass bottle, 25 cents for a plastic bottle or beverage can. And yet there is still a lot of packaging waste left over in our throw-away and one-way society: for coffee or lunch to take away, for example. The “One time without, please” campaign for packaging-free shopping (we reported) is counteracting the mountains of rubbish by allowing you to bring your own containers with you in certain shops. The other option: a reusable deposit system, in addition to the drinks mentioned above. This is what the Greens campaign for in Unterhaching.

"Especially in times of home office during the pandemic, not only coffee mugs but also single-use packaging for meals generate an immense amount of garbage," said Evi Karbaumer, the leader of the Greens, in the local council.

"That is why it would make sense to inspire the local restaurateurs for a uniform system and to support them with the introduction." Several communities in the district have already taken this route, for example Ismaning.

"These circulatory systems enable the crockery to be returned to all participating cafés, restaurants, bakeries and petrol stations," Karbaumer explained.

"The reusable container or cup can be taken with you for a deposit and returned."

Free hand for administration

In terms of the system itself, the Greens “don't want to anticipate and give the administration a free hand as to what support might look like”. This could, for example, be a separate “Unterhaching cup”, start-up financing for basic equipment, a loan system via the municipality itself or the connection to a supra-local system. The green vice mayor Johanna Zapf contacted the local restaurateurs three years ago and is happy to share her knowledge with the town hall administration if interested.

The Greens consider the introduction of such a local reusable deposit system to be urgently needed.

"Avoiding plastic waste saves unsolved disposal problems," said Karbaumer.

The classic “coffee-to-go cups” and other disposable crockery are often not thrown into the garbage can, but carelessly into nature: “They do not decompose to a sufficient extent, cannot be recycled due to their composition and are a burden for them Environment. ”According to calculations by Deutsche Umwelthilfe, 320,000 disposable cups are used per hour - Unterhaching can set a good example to stop the trend.

www.einmalohnebitte.de is already possible

It is still unclear whether and when it will be implemented. But: If you want to do without one-way packaging now, you can currently do so in four companies in Unterhaching, which are listed at www.einmalohnebitte.de. Whether it's a Tupperware jar or your own drinking bottle, private packaging is accepted in the two Hopfisterei branches (Hauptstraße 18 and Münchner Straße 42), at the Vinzenzmurr butcher's (Kapellenstraße 21) and at the butcher's Bauch (St.-Alto-Straße 1).
