After a month-long break due to the pandemic, it starts again on Tuesday (May 11th) in the BRK senior care center in Miesbach.

We talked to manager Stefanie Haussner (36) about the reasons.

Miesbach

- The elderly care of the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) in Miesbach works like a daycare center - but is aimed at seniors.

Here you will find full or half-day support and support from qualified staff.

Ms. Haussner, you are reopening care for the elderly, which you had to close due to the pandemic.

Why?

Stefanie Haussner:

First and foremost, it is about relieving family carers.

You should be able to catch your breath or keep appointments.

As a result of the pandemic, their burden has increased again because any possibility of creating a balance has disappeared.

Closing our care was also difficult for the seniors themselves.

Some of them are demented and need a certain steadiness.

The sudden change in your daily structure and the lack of your contact person in senior care are problematic against this background.

How do you limit the risk of corona infection?

We have developed a hygiene concept.

Among other things, it stipulates that a maximum of five instead of seven guests can be in senior care at the same time.

In addition, like the employees, they need a current negative corona test.

Because many of our guests are now vaccinated, the risk is no longer that high anyway.

Which seniors is your offer aimed at?

Seniors with dementia and no tendency to run away.

But seniors who are still cognitively fit can come too.

Anyone who no longer has any children or no partner can socialize here so as not to get lonely.

Our facility is barrier-free so that you can also visit it in a wheelchair.

As soon as possible, I plan to set up different groups for different seniors again.

What do the elderly do in the care?

Among other things, we read from the newspaper and talk about the latest news.

We offer sitting gymnastics and memory training.

For example, we name the beginning of a proverb like "The early bird ...".

Our guests then have to complete that.

It's an entertaining offer.

We laugh a lot.

What qualifications do the employees have?

All volunteers have completed dementia training.

They know how to communicate and deal with people with dementia.

Many employees have been with us for years and have a wealth of experience.

In addition, there is always a qualified nurse, which is usually me.

She takes on the activities that the volunteers cannot or do not trust themselves to do.

The care is individually adapted to the wishes and needs of the guests.

Do your guests need to get used to it?

Yes.

Our volunteers make sure that newcomers find their place in the group and support them with integration.

We also offer free trial days to get to know our offer without obligation.

Relatives can also be there.

What does senior care cost?

Ten euros an hour.

Relatives can apply to the long-term care insurance fund for a relief of 125 euros per month.

This is paid in addition to the care allowance.
